Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award
City Category

Biophilic Cities is pleased to announce that the 2023 Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award will include an inaugural City Category!

AWARD OVERVIEW

Since 2017, the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) has awarded the Stephen R. Kellert Biophilic Design Award to highlight biophilic design achievements in the built environment in acknowledgement of Stephen Kellert’s legacy as a pioneer in articulating and advocating for biophilic design principles.

ILFI is collaborating with Biophilic Cities for a new city award category, which will be in addition to the continued main biophilic design award and new regional category awards for European and Australian based projects.

BIOPHILIC CITY CATEGORY

The Biophilic City category invites nominees for implemented projects and programs that integrate nature across the urban fabric at scales from neighborhoods to cities to regions. This award category is a celebration of the innovative projects and programs underway in cities that nurture the promise of biophilia as an essential element of everyday life.

Exemplary nominees will highlight notable outcomes that include:

  • Fostering belonging and co-creation to invite inclusivity and equitable outcomes for all residents

  • Prioritizing native species and ecological connectivity to support biodiversity

  • Purposefully embracing and communicating the science underpinning the many benefits of daily contact with nature

  • Measuring progress towards biophilic goals by documenting and monitoring the quality and quantity of biophilic conditions

  • Pursuing opportunities to support biophilic investments on both public and private lands for the benefit of many, especially the repurposing of underused spaces.

AWARD APPLICATION

Applications will be accepted via the ILFI award site where submission requirements can also be reviewed along with the January 26 information webinar.

For the Biophilic City category award, in addition to the elements set forth for main award, we encourage narratives that speak to accomplishment of the notable outcomes identified above.
